Long service honoured at Show
23rd April 2008Twenty one Devon men and one woman will be honoured at the Devon County Show - May 15-17 at Westpoint, Exeter - for their work totalling a staggering 900 years in agriculture and horticulture.
Longest serving is Sidney Gardener, aged 74 fromCrediton who has been employed for the past 50 years as a carpenter and general builder working for J G Quicke & Partners, Newton St. Cyres, Crediton and will receive an award of £50.
In second place with a £30 award is 74-year-old John Jennings from Barnstaple who has been employed for 49 years as an estate worker and woodsman for Mrs P A Maxse, Bishops Tawton, Barnstaple.
Anthony Thomas, aged 60, from Exeter, is in third place and has worked for 45 years as a grounds keeper and gardener for Exeter City Council Parks & Open Spaces and will receive a £20 award.
The long service awards, run by the Council of the Devon County Agricultural Association, are open to men and women who have completed more than 30 years in agriculture, horticulture, or forestry.
Certificates and tankards will be presented to 12 men who work as ground keepers and gardeners for Exeter City Council Parks & Open Spaces:
- Keith Bright, aged 52 of Exeter who has been employed for 37 years
- David Cann, aged 52, from Exeter; 34 years
- Kenneth Cann, aged 59, from Exeter; 44 years
- John Ford, aged 53, from Exeter; 38 years
- Desmond Holding, aged 54, Exeter; 37 years
- David Howard, aged 60, Exeter; 43 years
- Robert Isaac, aged 55, Exeter; 33 years
- Paul Mayor, aged 54, Exeter; 36 years
- Brian Mitchell, aged 52, Exeter; 35 years
- Peter Mitchell, aged 59, Exeter; 43 years
- Keith Raddon, aged 58, Exeter; 37 years
- Anthony Thomas, aged 60, Exeter; 45 years
Also receiving tankards and certificates are:
- Melvyn Britton, aged 59, from Cullompton, who has worked for 38 years as a stockman for R E & D Snell, Kentisbeare, Cullompton

- Wendy Hart, aged 59, from Exeter, who has worked for 30 years as a Florist and Garden Centre Houseplant Supervisor working for St. Bridget Nurseries Ltd, Exeter
- Dennis Hunt, aged 59, from Minehead, who has been employed for 41 years as a farm manager and stockman or Mr G H Ward, Westacott Farm, East Buckland, Devon
- Francis Huxtable, aged 71, from Barnstaple, who has been employed for 40 years as an estate worker and woodsman working by Mrs P A Maxse, Bishops Tawton, Barnstaple
- Grenville Jennings, aged 74, from Barnstaple, who has been employed for 49 years as an estate worker and woodsman by Mrs P A Maxse, Bishops Tawton, Barnstaple
- Richard Maxwell, aged 53 from Barnstaple, who has been employed for 30 years as a tractor driver and agricultural farm worker at the Fortescue Estate, Filleigh.
