Devon woodland competition launch

24 October 2011

A competition to showcase the best woodlands in Devon is launched this week (w/c October 24) by the Devon County Show.

The competition invites entries from professional managers and woodland enthusiasts in an event which celebrates the importance of woodlands within the county’s environment and rural economy.

“Here in Devon we are fortunate that climate, soil conditions, and land ownership diversity enable us to establish, maintain, manage and enjoy a wider range of woodland structure than anywhere in Britain,” said Nick Davey, Chief Steward of Devon County Show’s Woodland Section.

“These woodlands range from the highly productive conifer element of the uplands, through intrinsically valuable conservation areas to individual woodlands providing an un-matched recreational and social asset to residents and visitors.”

Trees have a strong role to play in protecting the environment. They’ve helped stop flooding and soil erosion, both of which are expected to become bigger problems in the future. They also improve air and water quality and could help combat rising temperatures in urban areas.

Nick added: “The competition’s carefully designed classes have been formed to attract entries to illustrate the multiple benefits that are provided by woodlands in Devon. Clear objectives of management tend to be rewarded, but these objectives can be very varied and can include timber production, community access, conservation and recreation.”

A panel of experienced judges will inspect and report on all woodland entries, whether submitted by professional managers or woodland enthusiasts.

The schedule and application forms are available to download from the Devon County Show’s website www.devoncountyshow.co.uk or contact Lisa Moore at the Devon County Show, telephone 01392 353700, email LisaMoore@dcshow.org

The closing date for entries is November 30, so that judging can take place in February. This year’s winner is the Bratton Fleming Community Woodland owned by Bratton Fleming Parish Council in North Devon. The five and a half hectare broadleaf woodland is close to the centre of the village where visitors can enjoy a number of walks and a pond.
