Royal award for the Devon County Show’s volunteer stewards

‘MBE’ for volunteers who work tirelessly all year round

The stewards of the Devon County Show, which showcases the very best of farming, food and rural life on three days in May, has received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

The Award recognises the outstanding, voluntary service given throughout the year to help stage the largest annual event in the county.

Ollie Allen, Show Secretary, said: “The Devon County Agricultural Association is thrilled that the passion, enthusiasm and sheer hard work of our stewards at the Devon County Show, and in 2016 in particular, has been recognised.”

The Award, the highest given each year to volunteer groups, is equivalent in status to the MBE and was presented by the Lord Lieutenant, Mr David Fursdon.

The citation said: “The stewards of the Devon County Show are an excellent example of a highly motivated and committed group of volunteers who work tirelessly all the year round to ensure the success of the three-day event.

“They actively recruit newer and younger volunteers, acting as positive role models in order to provide the volunteer stewards of the future. Quite simply, without the volunteers the Show would not be able function.”

The Show was presented with a certificate signed by HM the Queen and a commemorative crystal which will be displayed at Westpoint near Exeter. The Stewards will receive specially commissioned lapel badges.
